Still no victory for 1st XI in 2009

Pwllheli’s miserable start to the 2009 season continued with another defeat , this time against bottom club Llangollen.

Fielding first, grumblings started from the slips as the very first ball of the innings was dispatched to the boundary.  Comments suggesting a lack of structured warm up was to blame, interspersed with various swear words were to continue for the majority of the 52 overs bowled!

In all honesty, we didn’t bowl that badly!  We gave Llangollen 30 runs more than we should have done but 132 all out was quite acceptable.  Bowling highlights were few and far between however – a welcome return to something approaching form by skipper Hughes who bowled 10 overs for 23 runs, Nadeem Mohammed 4 for 30 and Umair Aziz bowling 9 overs for only 14 runs stand out.

Some strange umpiring decisions didn’t help the Pwllheli bowlers – the strangest of which was a stumping by Gower that was so far out that the batsman actually started walking off, only to return when the umpire failed to give the obvious (and correct) decision!

Still a total of 132 was never going to be a problem!

In fact, a total of 13 would have been a problem!  Only 4 Pwllheli batsman managed to reach double figures against, what in all honesty, was a perfectly average bowling attack on a wicket that was made for batsman.  Gower top scored with 31 not out – unfortunately running out of partners before the total reached 100.

Rhys Griffiths fell the victim of a truly awful umpiring decision (strangely by the same umpire mentioned in the stumping mystery mentioned earlier) and some very unsporting behaviour from the opposition who failed to call him back.  This was made all the worse by the fact the earlier, Pwllheli opener Ceiri Rowlands had sportingly walked after edging the ball which the umpire failed to give out.

The Pwllheli innings stuttered and spluttered to 98 before the final wicket fell in only the 36th over.

In the bar after the match – a stunned Gower summed up the feelings of the entire team: “we were crap - however its Wendy's party so lets all drink some beer!”.

Something needs to change urgently if Pwllheli are to have any chance of staying in division one next season.  All suggestions welcome…….
