19/07/2009Mighty Pwllheli in push for promotion!
23 points away at Northop. Northop bowled out for 54 runs. England on the verge of an Ashes win. (please note - one of these statements may yet be proven to be wrong)
Winning the toss was going to be vital as the Northop wicket was damp and green - skipper Gower had a dismal record of winning the toss but followed Simon Owens advice to call heads - and heads it was! Gower had no hesitation in asking the home side to bat and after only 12 balls, this was already looking to be an excellent choice.
Two wickets for Ben Jones in his first over and the scoreboard was 0 - 2, unheard of this season! Simon Owen bowled brilliantly from the other end, moving the ball at right angles off the wicket to ensure that the Northop batsmen continued to struggle. A couple more wickets from Jones and the scoreboard showed 7-4, even more unheard of this season!
Both Pwllheli openers were proving to be a real handful, well supported by some excellent catching and fielding - Rob cooper, Chris Moore, Rhys Griffiths and Nadeem Mohammed all hanging onto every chance that came their way. Finally the Northop tail started to wag (with the score on 20 odd for 7!) and it was time to rest the excellent Jones (5 wickets) and Owens (2 wickets).
Nadeem Mohammed bowled two very tight overs but it was the other Nadeem, Nadeem Rehman, who mopped up the tail with 3 wickets for 2 runs from 2 overs!
Nortop 54 all out. Yes, 54 all out!
Skipper Gower gave an inspired team talk during the interval which basically stated he would resign if Pwllheli didn’t win from this position!
The Pwllheli openers set about their task with relish but Rob Cooper was soon on his way back, given out to a very, very dubious LBW, soon to be followed by Jones. Still, we only needed 25 to win with the solid pair of second head coach Williams and Nadeem Rehman at the wicket. A quick fire 18 from Nadeem, a quick fire 8 from Chris Moore and a solid 7 from second head coach Williams and the game was over.
4.30 in the afternoon and Pwllheli had 23 points under their belt. Back to the club for a small celebration!
In the bar, skipper Gower reflected on 4 hours travelling for 3 hours cricket: "What a game! To bowl a side out for 54 runs is an excellent performance - the whole team carried on from where we left off after the last couple of games and I cannot praise them enough. It’s a pleasure to skipper a side when everyone gives it 110% as everyone has done over the past weeks. After a performance like this it amazes me to see where we are in the league, if we continue to play like this then i think we will be pushing for promotion! Beers all round - Rhys its your shout I believe!"
