31/08/2009Rhewl humbled by the mighty Pwllheli
Moore and Owens blow the opposition away with a wonderful display of bowling.
Arriving at Ruthin school, it was hard to believe that a game was scheduled for that afternoon! It was hard to see the wicket and the outfield looked more like a rugby pitch than a cricket pitch and there was no opposition! However, by 1.15 (for a 1.00 start) the toss had been performed and Pwllheli skipper Gower had no hesitation is asking the hosts to bat first.
Mad, bad and dangerous Simon Owens and Ben ‘last week was the first match I have never bowled in’ Jones were this weeks opening attack – Owens bowling his normal tight line and length and troubling the batsmen, Jones bowling a mixed bag of full tosses and wides!
The Rhewl batsman were finding it tough going (remember they scored 230 last week!) and Owens was soon amongst the wickets with two near identical deliveries resulting in two rare catches by the second head coach Williams at slip. Not to be outdone, Ben Jones was finally in to his stride and clean bowled the Rhewl number 5.
Owens by this time was struggling, mumbling about a slippery run up but still managed to complete his full 13 overs, claiming 3 wickets for only 21 runs. Ben Jones was tiring by this stage and so it was time for the return of Chris Moore – who was promptly dispatched for a huge six! This appeared to get the bowlers juices flowing and a remarkable spell of aggressive bowling followed to earn Moore the impressive figures of 5 for 12 – remember he was hit for six in his first over!
Nadeem Rehman was on at the other end bowling his normal tight deliveries and was rewarded by a fine catch at short leg by Ceiri Rowlands. The Rhewl innings was in tatters by this stage, finally all out for 77 after only 36 overs – did they really score 230 last week?
Tea was a delight with a fine selection of home made cakes much enjoyed by the skipper and Rhys Griffiths!
So, there it was – 78 runs for a second consecutive victory. And didn’t Ben Jones and Rob Cooper make it look easy – 20 overs later it was all over, Cooper 48 not out and Jones 26 not out. Some strange shots were played by both batsmen but so what – we won!!
The Rhewl fielders were visibly upset and it was a shame to see many of them storming into the changing room ahead of the Pwllheli batsmen and not shaking hands – still, that was a bit of a thrashing wasn’t it?
In the bar afterwards, skipper Gower “a second straight win, this time against the team just below us is great news. It puts us very close to the 3 teams above us and with a couple more wins we could finish in the top half of the table! As always the whole team contributed to this victory, the team spirit is excellent – I’m sure that’s a major reason as to why we are doing so well. Beers all round I think Rhys!”
