With promotion rivals Bersham and Bangor both playing on Sunday, this 9 wicket victory put Pwllheli on the top of Division 2 for the first time in 2008, albeit for 24 hours.
St Asaph elected to bat and ground their way to 107 for the loss of 9 wickets from their 45 overs. The openers Andy Riley and Dafydd Jones put on 32 comfortable runs against the Pwllheli opening attack, before spinners Nadeem Rehman with three victims and skipper Michael Hughes with two tore the heart out of the visitors batting aided by some excellent catches. Colin Fleming top scored with 24 with swing bowler Richie Quershi and young speedster Nick Butterworth bagging two wickets each at the end.
The target was never going to be a problem on this good batting track and after the early loss of Gower well caught at point, Neil Williams with 36 and Rehman with 60 both batted carefully to reach the total in the 31st over. The Saints young attack bowled steadily with leg-spinner Dave Lee impressive and opening bowler Robinson threatening at first before Rehman pulled him over the clubhouse for an enormous six towards the end. Skiper Michael Hughes can be pleased with this performance but knows there will be stiffer tests ahead with crucial games against promotion rivals Bersham, Bangor and Dolgellau coming up this month.
