Victory at Halkyn secures title
Pwllheli are champions of Division Two after this eight wicket win at the Pant Newydd ground Halkyn. The ground had recovered from last week's deluge and the home side elected to bat first on a true but slow wicket, and it proved a dogged innings as Halkyn ground out 97 runs from their 45 overs. Opening bat Mike Briscoe carried his bat for an unbeaten 45. Pwllheli bowler Qureshi confirmed his position as most economical bowler at the club with 12 miserly overs conceeding just 11 runs, whilst overseas-star Rehman grabbed 3 victims to take his season's tally to 49 wickets.
In front of several loyal travelling supporters, Pwllheli's openers took the score to 77 before Neil Williams went lbw for a solid 36. Ben Jones fell soon after for 44 but Ceiri Rowlands' classic driving saw Pwllheli to their target
The team can congratulate themselves on a great season in which they won the most games, fourteen, in the whole North Wales League, and will look forward to 2009 and their biggest challange yet as they will take on the quality teams of Division One.
In the club bar afterwards (in the middle of an 18th fancy dress birthday party!)........... skipper Michael Hughes. I thank the travelling supporters and what a great team effort to bring this silverware to Pen Llyn. The groundstaff, Neil, Paul and Nadeem, have been great over this wet summer, and I also thank my senior players who have helped me on the field in this my first, of hopefully many, years as captain of Pwllheli Cricket Club..............................bring on 2009!
